FAIRFIELD COUNTY — The Fairfield Central High School Griffins won a pair of basketball games Tuesday night over rival Columbia High School.
The Fairfield Central Lady Griffins continued their winning ways this year but they had a scare put into them by the Lady Capitals from Columbia.
FCHS took an early 8-0 lead in the first quarter and then held off a Columbia fourth quarter rally to pull out a 37-33 victory.
Junior Jada Martin carried the team with her 18 points on 83 percent shooting from the floor, including two big three-pointers.
Junior Tiea’quanna Pearson turned in a solid game with hustle, pulling down a team high eight rebounds, including four off the offensive glass. She also had four steals to tie Martin for the team lead against Columbia.
The Griffins overcame 11 turnovers and a tepid shooting night by their other players to get a hard fought victory.
They play on the road at Eau Claire Friday night in region action at 6:30 p.m. The boys game will follow.
The FCHS boy’s varsity squad moved past the Capitals 61-53 on Tuesday night. It took some resiliency to do that because the Capitals let 27-22 at halftime, outscoring the Griffins 18-9 in the second quarter.
The Griffins came out focused and took control after halftime, though. In the third quarter they outscored Columbia 20-9 to take the lead. They then held on for the region victory.
Keith Workman led FHCS with 24 points. Jalyn Davis had a great all around game with 4 points, 6 assists and 10 rebounds. Daniel Maple also got into double figures, chipping in 17 points in the winning effort.
The team should be a lock for the playoffs according to head coach Devin Liferidge.
“Our seed will depend on how well we finish. Right now we are in second place and we will have a chance to play for first if we win out,” Liferidge said. “The kids are playing the right way at the right time and we are having fun doing it.”
