WINNSBORO – The Winnsboro Post Office has finally filled its top position that was left vacant after Emma Oliver retired at the end of July.
Interim postmaster Kim Deese stepped in and continued services at the post office until about two weeks ago when Mickey Gibson was named the 23rd Postmaster for Winnsboro.
Gibson is a native of Manning with 29 years of military experience under his belt. He went into the military shortly after high school and spent eight years on active duty. In August, he will have served 30 years in the military with most of that time in the Army Reserves. Over the course of his military career Gibson has been oversees twice, spent time in Germany and Kuwait.
He left active duty in 1992, and in 1994 his career began with the postal service. Gibson jump-started his career within the postal service as a clerk in the Orangeburg post office and from there he continued on to Columbia were he worked as a customer service supervisor. In 2000 Gibson found himself in Camden as the station manger and stayed there for 10 years. In July of 2011 he took on his first postmaster position in Bishopville were he served until taking the position here in Winnsboro.
Gibson said what he loves most about his job is, “The day is never the same, and there is so much variety.”
At this location he has about a dozen employees and shared that this office is the best one he has ever worked in. Although there are many struggles that are known within the postal service as a whole, Gibson does not allow the fact that each day they fail to meet payroll affect his work, nor does his employees.
Each day they come in and provide excellent customer service to the public. The fact of not being able to meet payroll only plays into fact that the local post office most close from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Friday to stay under budget, but it is a small price to pay for the service that is provided. This time also allows for the employees to have lunch.
Gibson is excited about being in Winnsboro and would like everyone to know that it they have an issue they are free to call him at 803-635-4741. The post office hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p .m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday the post office is open from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
