The search for fugitive Michael Roseboro ended with his capture around between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening. SLED agents and Chief Deputy Keith Lewis with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department were searching the grounds of Camp Welfare, a church affiliated camp near Great Falls.
They paid close attention to cabins on the camp ground as well as to the large open air building in the center of the camp.
SLED agents overheard Lewis engage in what Thom Berry with SLED says was interpreted as an amicable conversation with Roseboro.
Lewis and Roseboro talked for a few minutes before Roseboro shot himself in the chest. He was transported to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital for treatment. Berry said that SLED will continue to process the scene. A foam mattress and other evidence suggest that the area may have been where Roseboro holed up part of the time he was on the run.
Berry confirmed that Chief Deputy Lewis was not harmed during the encounter with Roseboro.
The two men had a conversation, the exact nature of which SLED is unaware of at this time. So far as Berry knows, at no time during the conversation did Roseboro ever point the weapon at Lewis.
There was no official update on Roseboro’s condition but the initial word on it was that while a gunshot wound to the chest is a serious injury the wounds at that time did not appear to be life threatening.
“We are relieved this search is now ended,” Berry said. “We would have preferred that Roseboro not have harmed himself, but at least no one else was harmed.”
Berry said that SLED will continue its investigation and proceed with its work in the hours and days to come.
“Thankfully, it ended peacefully and none of the officers were hurt,” Berry said.
