WINNSBORO — Five young men will be honored Friday night at Richard Winn Academy before the Eagles take on the reigning state champions in their division, Wardlaw Academy.
These seniors are leaving a legacy as the first group to help establish eight man football at RWA.
They have a tall task ahead of them against the undefeated Patriots of Wardlaw.
Coach Kenny Atkerson said that Wardlaw is an athletic club with a lot of big players.
They run a variety of offensive sets. Sometimes they run single wing and other times the pound the ball in the I-formation. Just when the defense starts to adjust, this bunch spreads the field, too.
A four man front with a three man stack awaits the Eagles on defense.
Atkerson knows his team will be challenged on offense and defense against this team which has good athleticism and size.
He does not think they will be intimidated.
“I believe that our players will be excited about playing their last game here and also with the chance to play a really good team,” he said. “We are healthy as far as injuries go but have several players who are fighting a virus of some type. Hopefully everyone will be healthy Friday.”
Assignment football once again will be the key for the Eagles because it will take a team effort to try and contain Wardlaw’s talented rushing attack.
Atkerson said the team who controls the line of scrimmage will win this game.
Last week’s victory over Andrew Jackson is something to build upon as the Eagle’s prepare for senior night.
“We blocked well and hit the areas that we needed to hit with our backs, last week,” he said. “Then we got in the secondary we did a good job of maintaining blocks and allowed for some cutbacks.”
When his team plays together, he likes its chances regardless of the level of competition.
“Defensively we played well together last week and controlled the gaps not giving up any long runs,” he said. “We had one coverage problem that they took advantage of but solved it during the game.”
Senior cheerleaders and senior football players will be honored with their parents at halftime of the game. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
“We thank all our fans for their support and look forward to seeing everyone here Friday,” Atkerson said.
