NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy opened their home schedule Friday at Setzler Field against Richard Winn. Both teams have Eagles for mascots, and use blue as a primary color. That is where the comparison ended.

Richard Winn, the reigning SCISA 8-man state champs, played like champions, dominating Newberry from the outset in a 54-0 rout.

Richard Winn scored early and often in a penalty-marred first half. The visiting Eagles scored on the opening kickoff, and quickly scored again after a fumbled snap by Newberry.

Newberry’s offensive efforts were hampered by the aggressive Richard Winn defense, but also by injury, as starting quarterback Tyrese Taylor left in the first quarter and would not return. Newberry trailed 42-0 at the half.

The game resumed in the second half under SCISA mercy rules, but there were a few bright spots in the shortened game. Landen York took over as quarterback and was effective in his relief role, completing 4 of 6 pass attempts. The home team managed a few first downs in the second half as York completed passes to Dillon Morris and Michael Shaw.

Morris finished with three receptions for 34 yards. York added 42 yards on the ground.
