Post 8346 hosting barbecue benefit
by Kevin Boozer
Staff Writer

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8346 is holding a barbecue benefit on Saturday at 74 Veterans Drive in Ridgeway.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. whole barbecue butts and whole racks of ribs will be for sale.

The BBQ features the veterans’ famous secret recipe that they serve each year at this annual event.

Proceeds will fund community service projects for the VFW including donating Christmas baskets to needy families, giving holiday gifts at area nursing homes as well as providing line dancing and musical performances there, and providing transportation for veterans to the VA Hospital in Columbia.

The VFW also hosted the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle group who recently gave an informative presentation about South Carolinians who are POWs or persons who are missing in action.

After the presentation the VFW held a flag retirement ceremony to properly dispose of old flags. They also provide awards programs for Fairfield Central Middle and High School students.

VFW members also placed flags on local veteran’s graves for Memorial Day, and this year they are partnering with the Boy Scouts of America to place flags on a military cemetery in Florence.

As a result of these and other efforts, this year Post 8346 achieved All-State Post status, something it has not earned in 15 years.

The award recognized the 114 member group for its community service activities, its safety programs and for having 100 percent membership, plus adding one member, within the past year.

The VFW Post 8346 has members from Winnsboro, Ridgeway Lugoff and the surrounding area.

Bob Levangie, commander at the VFW Post 8346, says new members are always welcome. To join one must be a veteran of the armed services.

Immediate family members may also join either the women’s or men’s auxiliary groups.

Levangie said that most of their events are open to the public. Popular community events include turkey shoots, Thursday night line dancing with lessons provided, a fall family fun day in October, and other holiday dances.
