WINNSBORO — Spartanburg Christian Academy trounced a young Richard Winn Eagles softball team 12-0 Tuesday evening. Though the girls came up on the short end of this one, Coach Retta Taylor likes what this 8-3 team has shown her this year in terms of competitiveness, hustle and heart.
Their record has the Eagles on the bubble for the state tournament beginning May 10.
Bailey Taylor pitched a complete game in defeat and she managed two of the Eagles four hits on the afternoon. The other two hits went to Jordan Parris.
“We are having a good season considering how young we are and that we are just starting varsity softball back (at RWA),” Coach Taylor said.
She said the girls have come a long way and she thinks that their playing such tough competition will only make the team stronger in the future. At one point she said she started four eighth-graders in the infield at the same time as she tinkered with her line up.
She pointed to the contributions of Alyssa Atkerson and Bailey Taylor, both eighth-graders, and said two other promising young players were freshman infielder/outfielder Megan Simpson.
Their final home game is April 30 against Wardlaw. This young team has no seniors, so there will be no senior night this year.
The Lady Eagles next play at home Friday night against Newberry Academy. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
