A Fairfield County woman was shot and killed Friday night after a domestic dispute with her husband spiraled out of control.
Fairfield County Sheriff’s investigators said 67-year-old Gloria Young was shot once in the stomach at approximately 8 p.m. Friday at her home on 4697 Greenbrier Mossydale Road. She was transported to Richland Memorial Hospital where she died around 10:30 p.m. Young’s husband, Baylus Young, 67, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent offense. Bond was denied Baylus Young Sunday morning and he remains at the Fairfield County Detention Center.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to a 9-1-1 call from the location at 7:57 p.m. Friday. Although no report was made from the caller, the call was also not a 9-1-1 hang-up. Instead, the 9-1-1 operator could hear what sounded like a domestic dispute in progress in the background and dispatched deputies to the home. As deputies were en route, a second call came in, this time clearly from Gloria Young who told the operator she had been shot in the stomach. Deputies arrived on the scene at 8:05 p.m. to find Gloria severely wounded. The weapon, investigators said, appears to have been a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun.
Investigators said it remains unclear what the argument between the Youngs was about, but it does appear that alcohol was involved.
Contrary to initial reports of a 6-year-old grandchild being in the home at the time of the shooting, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the couple was, in fact, in the home alone.
