WINNSBORO — Employees were evacuated from the Fairfield County Judicial Center around 8:30 a.m. Thursday after employees complained about a raucous smell coming from the building.
“For precautionary purposes, we evacuated all employees from the building and called Jesse Douglas with the Town of Winnsboro Gas, Water & Wastewater to inspect the building,” County Deputy Administrator Davis Anderson said.
After the inspection, a natural gas leak was determined to be present in the building.
At press time the source of the leak had not been located. If the leak was not located Thursday evening, the evacuation was to remain in place Friday as well. Anderson said building will remain empty until the leak is located and repaired.
“Employees will not re-enter the building until we are certain that it is safe and the situation is fully under control,” Anderson said.
He advised the public to call the county administration building at 712-6502 on Friday to see if the building has been reopened.
