Larry Squirewell and Deon Ruff place flags up and down Congress Street in honor of Flag Day on Thursday. The holiday has existed in some form since the 1700s, though it became a national holiday when President Harry Truman proclaimed it as such in 1949. Flags decorated the main street in Winnsboro helping celebrate a holiday when the government requested that Americans fly flags at their homes. Our national symbol began with 13 red and 13 white stripes and 13 white stars on a field of blue which represented a new constellation.
