Geiger Elementary School’s Camera Club was treated to an exciting program at the historic Blackstock Bluegrass Music Station on March 28. In partnering with the Fairfield County Museum, the Fairfield County Arts Council and the county school district’s arts programs, this timely project celebrates National School Arts Month and the upcoming Smithsonian Museum on Main’s Traveling Exhibit, New Harmonies, which starts April 29 at the county museum.
Arts coordinator Julianne Neal and art teacher Katrina Hampton collaborated with Barry Murray and the musicians of the Blackstock Station and the Fairfield County Museum to make this program possible. The Fairfield Arts Council donated cameras to the lucky students and Ms. Hampton instructed them on photographic composition and special tips on how to document special events.
The budding photographers got an opportunity to document roots music in action with a Bluegrass program by the Blackstock musicians that was inspired by old railroad and hobo melodies. The students also got to photograph Murray’s music industry museum collection and memorabilia display that makes the historic building a unique place for Americana culture. These student’s pictures will be part of the arts display at the Ridgeway Arts on the Ridge Festival in May.
The Fairfield County Museum in Winnsboro was selected as one of the 12 rural communities in the U.S. to welcome the 2011-2012 Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street traveling show, New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music exhibit, sponsored by the U.S. Congress and the S.C. Humanities Council. The exhibit explores many aspects of America’s roots music that includes the blues, country-western, folk ballads and gospel. The main beat of the exhibition is the ongoing cultural process that has made America the birthplace of more music than any place on earth. The exhibition provides a fascinating, inspiring and toe-tapping experience that unfolds the American story of multi-cultural exchanges as it pertains to our community heritage.
The official opening of the exhibit starts on April 28 at the Fairfield County Museum with an exhibit preview and other community activities.
