A seemingly routine test drive at a local car dealership turned into a car theft Thursday as a man and a woman drove a 2011 Dodge Charger off the lot at Wilson Chevrolet on 798 Highway 321 N. and never returned.

According to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, the couple drove onto the lot in a 2004 BMW bearing Georgia plates between 4 and 5 p.m. Thursday, ostensibly shopping for a new car. After making a copy of the female’s driver’s license, a test drive was arranged and the couple drove away in the $40,000 Charger, heading north on Highway 321.

Investigators later checked the driver’s license, which was issued to Naujauh Shema Bowers, 22, of June Drive in Columbia, and found that it matched the female subject, but that the license had been suspended. The other subject had only introduced himself as “Shawn,” the victim said, and was described as a black male, approximately 30 years old, standing 5-foot-6 and weighing approximately 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt. Bowers, the victim said, was professionally dressed when she arrived at the business.

A check of the BMW the couple had driven onto the lot revealed that it had been stolen out of Georgia. The emblem on the BMW also did not match the model of the car, the incident report states. The BMW was towed from the lot.
