WINNSBORO — A young group of Lady Eagles takes to the softball diamond this spring with a head coach who is working her way through her first year coaching varsity softball. Last year coach Retta Taylor was the head coach of the JV team.
That means this bunch faces a learning curve, but where better than school to embrace learning?
With four eighth-graders at positions in the infield, Taylor knows they have a lot of work ahead but she says the girls are working very hard.
“With this being our first year at the varsity level we are still developing the hitting game,” she said.
Coach Taylor said Bailey Taylor was a solid hitter on JV last year and has carried that approach over to this season. Cassidy Pope, Jordan Parris, and Alyssa Atkerson are three others who are being counted on and have gotten off to good starts this season.
The team had a 2-0 start this spring despite a lot of youth and inexperience. They defeated Calhoun Academy 12-6 and won over Great Falls 9-0.
Those two things are what Taylor feels are the biggest challenges her girls face this year.
“I think we will grow as a team this year. Our girls talk about the team as a family. If we keep this attitude positive things will happen,” she said.
The Lady Eagles played Wardlaw Academy on Thursday but results were too late for this edition of The Herald Independent.
