I overheard a local government official asking why he did not know that a particular organization’s holiday party was being held one evening. As we at the Museum had just hosted the Christmas event at the county museum and it was noted that no officials had been present there, I asked this representative of our community if he had not read the emails that had been sent to his address or had he read the advertisements and articles in our local paper.

“I get too many emails and delete most without reading them, ” he answered.

I then asked if he had not seen the local press articles about both community events, to which he also said he did not have time to read them.

I asked him how in this world are we going to inform him personally of community events when our budgets don’t include secretarial help or funding to send out personal mail. Furthermore, if someone is supposed to represent his constituents, it seems to me he/she should be well versed in informing himself through media what is going on in our area.
