WINNSBORO — After having two games postponed this week because of weather, the Fairfield Central Griffins are back on the diamond Friday.

The Griffins will host the Raiders of Keenan (2-1, 0-1) for their first home game since March 5.

Fairfield will be looking for its first region win, but head coach Scotty Dean knows it won’t come easy against a Keenan team that has been progressively getting better.

“Ever since he (Derek Wilson) took over the program, they’ve been getting better each year,” Dean noted. “He does a good job with his kids, getting them to play hard and coaching the game.”

Keenan is coming off a 4-1 loss at North Central.

Stanley McManus will take the mound for the Griffins and Dean said McManus looked good after throwing from shortstop this week.

“He pitched well for us against Richard Winn and he is feeling good and ready to go,” Dean noted. “But we need to play good defense behind him (McManus) and eliminate the extra outs we give opponents.”

According to Dean, the Griffins spent the majority of their practice time this week working on defense.

“We won’t to eliminate the errors and minimize the walks and play solid on defense,” he said.

Not only did Fairfield work on defensive play, but they also took plenty of swings and hope to shore up some of their base running mistakes.

“That’s (base running) been a key for us,” Dean noted. “It is hard enough to get on base, so we can’t afford to get picked off or make an error that can cause us a win. If we get our bats going, we’ll be competitive in this game.”

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
