BLACKSTOCK — A Great Falls woman died Wednesday after jumping from a cliff into the water in a rock quarry in Blackstock.
Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey identified the woman as 26-year-old Brooke Lynn Huffstetler.
Ramsey said the cause of death as asphyxiation due to drowning. The death was ruled an accident.
According to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Huffstetler and a group of friends were swimming at a quarry off S.C. 901 and jumping off a cliff about 25 feet above the water.
The incident report stated Huffstetler struck a tree on her first jump, but appeared to be fine.
On her second jump, Huffstetler struck the same tree and landed face down in the water, according to witnesses. Witnesses told police they could not find Huffstetler after climbing down a rope to the water.
Witnesses said Huffstetler never resurfaced after landing in the water.
According to the incident report, dispatch received the call around 7 p.m. Officials said a team of six divers recovered Huffstetler’s body about 90 minutes after receiving the call.
The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Medical Services, Department of Natural Resources and a search team from the Fairfield County Fire Department assisted.
According to the incident report, witnesses told police that the property owner was unaware they were on the property.
