WINNSBORO — Several resource groups came together on Oct. 30 at Midlands Technical College to tackle the issue of unemployment in Fairfield County.


It was the final meeting of the 2013 calender year, which Fairfield County Liaison Jackie Workman has set up to be held on a quarterly basis.


Workman presented those in attendance with persons and companies whose primary responsibility is to raise awareness and fill jobs. The strategic networking luncheon was themed “Moving Forward.”


“That is why this group has come together,” County Councilman Kamau Marcharia said. “It has come to work together and to move forward.”


One of Workman’s main roles in the county is to make referrals to employers and also refer applicants to Midlands Technical College.


She also can help a person obtain SLED reports and is now able to assist with an expungement process, because of contributions made by the First Church of the Nazarene.


Workman takes pride in her role and is touched by the success of others.


“I’m very excited when people get hired because I feel like I’m getting hired as well,” Workman said.


She set up 52 profiles for prospective employees during the month of October, by sending out emails and resumes. According to Workman, there were 125 people hired through her recommended services since January.


Because of the recent success, the waiting list has grown from 150 people to 900 people since Mar. CBI only hired 48 people from Jan. to Mar., but since have hired 101, with 83 coming from Fairfield County.


Workman also emphasized that funding is available at the Quick Jobs Center for training programs. All that is required is for prospective employees to attend the information sessions.


Hope Williams, a S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce representative, also offered to come out on location to give workshops and more information about the resources available to gain employment.


Workman asked local pastors in attendance to help by sending out the resource contact list to assist people in finding a job.


“If people aren’t referred to the resources then how would they know whats available, so I’m just asking our local pastors to deliver the information to their congregations,” she said.


School Superintendent J.R. Green believes that it takes the help of everyone in a community to move forward.


“The whole purpose of this meeting is to foster our ability to work together,” he noted. “A single finger can’t move much, but if we can come together as a whole hand then we can move much.”
