Residents embrace history on annual Ghost Lantern Tour

WINNSBORO — Tour guides and actors/actresses from The Pine Tree Players entertained patrons with stories and reenactments of local ghost stories this past weekend.
It was the 10th annual Olde Haunted Ghost Lantern Tour and gave citizens the opportunity to participate in a leisurely stroll around the surrounding neighborhoods of downtown Winnsboro.
In addition to sharing ghostly and historical legends, period dress and period food were used during the event.
Tour guides Andi Phipps and Lisa Cathcart told stories about residents, homes and local merchants who have reported mysterious paranormal activity around town.
Tales of Col. Richard Winn and even former Herald Independent employee Ms. Pauline were told.
Other former office employees talked about Ms. Pauline and how she always demanded the best out of them and would always walk around the office saying, “get back to work.”
Ms. Pauline resided in a home across from the Washington Street Baptist Church and the current owners have reported hearing a woman saying “get back to work.”
When the home owners returned home from vacation they noticed high heel footprints that continue to appear even after wiping them away.
The walking tour also went by the Sion Presbyterian Cemetery, where there are 22 confederate soldiers buried. During Phipps’ tour, she mentioned three men — who were soldiers and friends — whose orbs show up over their tombstones in photographs.
Eventually coming through town and in front of the County Courthouse, guides also told stories for the first time about Sheriff Hood who was shot on the courthouse steps.
Ticket sales raised money for the Winnsboro Woman’s Club scholarships that are given yearly to local high school seniors. If you have a ghost story you would like to report, email Cathcart at firstname.lastname@example.org.
