WINNSBORO — Residents from around Fairfield County came together last Saturday to celebrate Winnsboro’s first Pumpkin Fest.

Downtown merchants got into the act by decorating their doors and setting up tables for trick-or-treaters.

The award for the best decorated storefront was given to Summer Day, and owner Kathy Timms was happy to be apart of the inaugural event.

“We just thought the first Pumpkin Fest was so much fun and look forward to doing it next year,” she said.

The best jack-o-lantern carving was won by William Fair, and the award for the best decorated table went to the Cornwallis Tea House, who had set up a wall that allowed kids to use a fishing pole to reel in their candy bags from the other side.

Amy Pulaski took home the prize from the pumpkin pie contest. She made handmade dough leaves around the edge of the pie. Pulaski had originally brought an apple pie, but after being informed it was a pumpkin pie contest, she returned home to bake a pumpkin pie while racing against time.

Hoot’s owner LuAnn McLeary was impressed by Pulaski’s prize winning pie, especially after returning home to start from scratch.

“She (Pulaski) said not a problem and came back two hours later with a pumpkin pie in hand,” McLeary explained. “It really was amazing what she (Pulaski) did considering how much time she had.”

Nearly 100 people attended the Columbia Marionette puppet show in the gazebo area. Community development and grant administrator Connie Shackelford said the stilt walker and hula hoops were some of the festival favorites. She hopes to do the event again next year and make the Pumpkin Fest an annual event in downtown Winnsboro.

“Everybody had a great time and there was so much stuff for the children to do,” Shackelford said. “It turned out wonderful and I think it was a really good event.”
