SPARTANBURG — RWA rode the efficient pitching of senior Austin Knox (4-0) to a 9-1 victory over Oakbrook Prep.
Knox struck out the lead-off batter but then ran into a rough patch in the first, giving up a double and an RBI-single to the Knights.
With RWA trailing 1-0, he regrouped, did damage control and got out of the inning.
His teammates got Knox off the hook in the bottom of the first as they plated two runs to put RWA ahead.
That 2-1 lead was all the run support Knox needed on the day.
He retired the next 13 batters in a row and Knox needed just 70 pitches to complete his five innings of work.
He pounded the strike zone, dropping in 50 of those pitches for strikes.
The RWA Senior right-hander struck out nine and did not allow a walk.
The only other blemish on Knox’s day after the first was a hit batter with two outs in the fifth.
With Knox settling in, the Eagle hitters gave him plenty of run support, scoring two runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning.
Knox capped off the scoring when he hit a towering home run to deep center-field in the sixth.
After the game, Richard Winn head coach Al Berry praised his team’s pitching and hitting, but said he was especially pleased with the defense.
“We’ve been working on our fielding and we take a lot of pride in our defense,” he noted. “The guys are playing good defense and we’ve been working really hard on our hitting. We try to play good defense and bring that to the game every time.”
The slick glove work paid off as RWA finished the game without committing an error. Oakbrook, by contrast, had three errors.
Over all, the Eagles out hit the Knights 10-4.
Leading RWA hitters were Matt Taylor, 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 run scored; Blake Pauley, 2-2 two RBI and two runs scored; Patrick Pope 2-3 two RBI, one run scored; and Austin Knox 1-4 with a home run.
Oakbrook’s top hitters were Chris Simmons, 2-3 with a run scored; Slade Glenn, 1-3 with an RBI; and Nelson Seay, 1-3.
The Eagles returned home March 31 against Spartanburg Christian.
