WINNSBORO — Fairfield Elementary School can thank Ridgeway for its newest tool in its Highly Effective Teaching toolbox. Stacy Ridgeway, that is.

The renowned Atlanta muralist (Mural, Mural on the Wall) was on campus this month painting murals in Fairfield Elementary School for the theme “Sailing to academic success at FES.”

Dr. Tammy Martin, principal at FES, was not only impressed with Ridgeway’s work ethic and artistic talent, but she marveled at his teaching ability.

In addition to spending the better part of three days painting over the cement block walls at FES, Ridgeway taught classes for all grade levels all day Friday. After 3 p.m. he went back to painting murals full-time and continued on the project until 10 p.m.

That followed a Thursday at FES from 3:30 p.m. until 10 p.m where he was painting the mural. Martin said Ridgeway worked until 2 p.m. Saturday to finish the work. She said the next step is for the school to choose its mascot. She hinted that the new school mascot will keep with the nautical theme.

“He was so energetic,” Martin said, “and he really helped us work on our learning environment for our highly effective teaching model.”

Ridgeway gave out prizes to the students. She said they loved the way he taught their art classes.

Teaching is an important part of Ridgeway’s business. According to his website mural, mural on the wall, he received a BFA in fine arts in 1980 and a MFA in 1995. Once his son was born he received requests to paint murals in nurseries and schools and was able to turn those assignments into a family business.

Ridgeway began training his son Stace to paint at age 3 and according to the website, the younger Ridgeway joined the family business after he completed college. The Ridgeways have painted over 30,000 murals in more than 15 states.

Martin said that nautical themed paintings by Art Teacher Robyn Scott were moved into the cafeteria/auditorium areas but they still will be in keeping with the highly effective teaching model.
