FAIRFIELD COUNTY — The Fairfield Career and Technology Center has implemented a new Firefighter and Emergency Management program for the 2015-16 school year.
The program is based on the tenets of Courage, Moral Character, and Respect. Four days into the new school year, the students donned full bunker gear and self-contained breathing apparatus equipment for tours of Fairfield Central High School and Fairfield Middle School.
The firefighter students performed rescue demonstrations in a FCHS basement classroom before climbing two flights of stairs to a third-floor classroom, all while completely dressed in full bunker gear.
While the classroom demonstrations and school tours were points of pride for existing fire program students, it was also an acclimation period allowing students to adjust to the weight and feel of the gear and equipment.
The demonstrations and tours also helped to promote the new program and increase student desire to join. Interested students will have to visit their guidance counselor to get into the program.
The courses are taught by Tony Ferreira, formerly of the SC Fire Academy. The Firefighter and Emergency Management program has 24 students enrolled for the Fall 2015 semester.
