NEWBERRY — Local business Smart Education Solutions is helping students in Newberry on the path to college by now offering SAT preparation workshops.
“Most high school students have to take one of the standardized tests to get into college, most choose the SAT,” said co-owner Sandra Davis.
The College Board, which designs and publishes the SAT, will be rolling out a newly formatted test beginning in March.
“We’ll be expressing the differences between the old and new tests. The new test is actually geared more towards the Common Core standards,” Davis said.
A key difference between the two, Davis said, is the new SAT will now penalize students for leaving questions blank, making it important to attempt every question.
Davis also said the essay portion of the test is now optional, although most colleges still require it.
As far as the content of the workshops Davis said focus will be placed on general test taking strategies, such as elimination and pacing, as well as individualized emphasis in the areas of writing, reading comprehension and mathematics.
Two types of workshops will be offered, one five hours and the other eight hours, both limited to 10 students.
“What we are going to have students do is go to the College Board website and take a practice SAT, print out their results and bring them to us at least a week before hand,” Davis said.
The results will be used by Davis and her partner,Dr. Carmen Stone, to personalize the workshops based on the particular needs of each group.
The first workshop is five hours and will be held Feb. 6 at a cost of $150 with a late fee applied if registered after Jan. 29.
In the eight hour session, which costs $299 and is scheduled for Feb. 20, a SAT simulation will take place at the end so that results can be compared to the preliminary practice test.
Those registering for the second workshop before Jan. 22 will receive the discounted rate of $275 and after Feb. 12 a late fee will be applied.
