WINNSBORO — The decision to form a tax-exempt foundation by the Fairfield Memorial Hospital board of trustees more than five years ago has now grown to become nearly $200,000 in value to the hospital.

“When I was asked to join the board of trustees in the summer of 2009, much of the work to form a foundation to support our local hospital had already begun,” said Mike Quinn, current president. “When the board learned I had just retired from the IRS, they asked me to help with the final steps to obtain tax-exempt status.”

In May 2010 the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Foundation became official, a status that remains permanent.

“We now had a tax-exempt organization that could accept donations and grants to help the hospital,” Quinn said.

Through a series of special events and fundraisers, the newly-appointed volunteer board of directors began to discuss ways to raise funds.

“We began by working with the hospital public relations director on the annual holiday gala, but we quickly outgrew that event. We now hold a big Barbeque, Bluegrass and Blue Jeans and event each year,” he said.

Within a matter of months hospital administrator Mike Williams realized we needed a person on staff to serve as executive director, a position commonly used by other hospitals in the state.

“Our job search led us to Dawn Catalano who we hired in June of 2011,” he said.

“She brought to the table a wealth of experience in hospital public relations and fund raising,” Quinn said. “I don’t know what we’d do without her.”

Now five years old, the hospital foundation has contributed more than $115,000 in purchases through fund -raising events, grants, direct donations and in-kind donations. In addition, the foundation has a cash reserve for future needs of the hospital.

Among one of the first major purchases was a new nurse call system. The Foundation partnered with the hospital to pay half of the cost of the modern system, Quinn said.

Last year, the foundation purchased a new portable EKG machine as well as a number of less expensive items the hospital staff needed.

“Sometimes we can get in-kind items from other hospitals,” said Dawn Catalano, foundation executive director. “Larger hospitals buy new equipment and donate older but usable equipment and furniture to smaller hospitals.”

Catalano pointed to the recent donation of a blanket warmer as an example.

“It works just fine,” she said. “It’s a needed piece of equipment that’s being used throughout the hospital for patients.”

The foundation also supports hospital projects for community use like the walking track in front of the hospital.

“People use it all the time,” Quinn said. “So we planted some young trees, and added some benches and a picnic table, thanks to grants we were awarded.

“In addition to generous sponsors for our events, we still count on donations from the community. A community-based hospital helps spurn economic growth,” he added.
