WINNSBORO — The Rockton, Rion and Western Railroad Museum enjoys approximately 10,000 visitors each year. This month, they had a special visitor who draws crowds anywhere he goes.

Santa left his sleigh at the North Pole and instead chose to take the train. In fact, he rode along on several train rides and met with children from all over the state who came for the unique experience of a train ride with Santa.

The trains were their own brand of unique as well. The locomotive primarily used is a veteran. In fact, four of the locomotives at Rockton, Rion, and Western Railroad Museum are veterans.

They’re easy to spot too. The two Army locomotives are black and yellow, and the two Air Force locomotives are blue and yellow.

The museum hosted jolly Old Saint Nick for two weekends as they treated riders to a trip through history. While veteran locomotives are pretty amazing, they’re still not quite as unique as flying reindeer.

So while the all-volunteer staff at the museum were all thrilled with the turnout and to host the visitors that came out, it was time for Santa to move on.

Don’t fret though, as Santa will continue to make appearances throughout the community. When asked how he makes time in this, his busiest time of the year, Santa replied: “After preparing all year for the season, I try to rely on my support in the last weeks before Christmas so I can get out and be reminded of the reason for the season.”
