WINNSBORO – Patricia M. Edwards has been named general manager of The Herald Independent and will continue serving as the regional editor for Civitas Media’s group of papers in South Carolina.

Edwards was named to her new position by Ralph J. Martin, CEO of Civitas Media, and Kent Kilpatrick, Regional Director of Civitas Media’s Carolinas Region.

“I am pleased to have Patricia overseeing our newspaper in Winnsboro as general manager, as well as continuing her regional editor responsibilities for our South Carolina publications and websites,” Kilpatrick said. “Her experience in the newspaper industry and involvement in the Winnsboro community will help the Herald Independent better serve our customers.”

Edwards retains her role as regional editor in South Carolina. In that role she will oversee the editorial staff and content of The Union Daily Times, the Newberry Observer, The Herald-Independent of Winnsboro, The Easley Progress, The Pickens Sentinel and the Powdersville Post.

“Community newspapers, when they are presented to the public like they should be, are the backbone of any community,” Edwards said. “Our newspapers throughout South Carolina are the vehicles that the community uses to find out about their world – both in their own backyard and beyond. I am looking forward to helping The Herald Independent grow and expand its footprint, through our print and digital platforms.”

Kilpatrick stressed the importance of the local paper to the community it serves.

“The news and events of our communities are very important to everyone,” he said. “The Herald Independent is their diary. We take this responsibility very seriously. We have many improvements coming to the pages of the Herald Independent. We are excited to be able to add to our already rich, local content. We feel our readers and advertising partners will enjoy the enhancements.”

Edwards has 25 years of experience in the newspaper industry, beginning in June 1990 as an intern at The Index-Journal in her hometown of Greenwood.

She has held several different editorial management positions over the course of her career, including editor of a daily paper and publisher for seven years of a weekly paper in North Carolina. She has worked for Sun Coast Media Group, New Publishing Co. and Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. before joining Civitas Media in 2012.
