WINNSBORO — For the third consecutive weekend, Fairfield County was host to a festival. This one, however, was completely different from the previous two.

This festival brought Spartans from all over the world to Carolina Adventure World.

Spartan races are well known for their difficulty. Organizers welcome individuals and teams from all over to try their hands at endurance races that incorporate rugged terrain and brutal obstacles on courses that range from around 3 miles to over 13.

This weekend’s race was the “Carolina Beast,” one of the most difficult of the Spartan Races. It covered 13.1 miles and consisted of more than 30 obstacles, from wall climbing to rope climbing and plenty of mud to crawl through.

The sheer number of competitors was impressive, with lines extending out of Carolina Adventure World’s entrance for over two miles.

With 250 racers starting every 15 minutes starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, it would be easy to estimate the number of racers well over 5,000 each day. That was in addition to friends and family there to watch and cheer their Spartans on.
