NEWBERRY — The Lady Griffins of Fairfield Central (11-4, 4-1) fell on the road Saturday at Newberry 52-46.
It was a back-and-forth contest that saw the lead change hands several times.
At the end of the first quarter Newberry held a slight advantage 12-9. By halftime, the Lady Griffs had retaken the lead 27-21. However, the Lady Bulldogs outscored Fairfield 16-7 in the third quarter and led 37-34 to start the final frame. That slim lead would be too much for the Griffins to overcome, as Newberry went on to defeat Fairfield Central 54-46.
The loss broke a four-game winning streak for the Lady Griffins.
Prior to the loss, Fairfield Central was coming off a dominating 61-7 win at North Central. The Lady Griffins jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter and were in full control by halftime with a 43-5 advantage.
As a team, Fairfield shot 51 percent from the floor and grabbed 18 steals.
At least nine players scored, with Jada Martin’s 12 points leading the way. She also grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Christian Thompson chipped in 11.
Next up for the Lady Griffins is the Shamrocks of Eau Claire (3-13, 2-3) on Jan. 31. Fairfield Central defeated Eau Claire 62-36 two weeks ago on Jan. 14. The Lady Shamrocks have lost three of their past four games.
Tip-off at Fairfield Central High School is scheduled for 6 p.m.
