WINNSBORO — The Sunday afternoon double shooting that the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate on 716 Old Chester Road has turned deadly. According to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Avery Markey Caldwell, 25, of 688 Old Chester Road, Winnsboro, died Tuesday morning at Richland Memorial Hospital. Chief Deputy Keith Lewis said the mortal wound appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to Caldwell’s head.

Sunday afternoon a domestic dispute between Caldwell and his girlfriend, Brittany Scott, 25, of 688 Old Chester Road, turned violent.

“It appears that the suspect Avery Caldwell got upset because she (victim Brittany Scott) informed him she was going to leave. At this point we are unsure if she meant leave for the afternoon or leave for a longer period of time,” Lewis said. “The two had an argument and he fired three times at her, hitting her twice. Then, as best we can tell, he goes into the bedroom, reloads and turns the gun on himself.”

According to the incident report, Scott ran out of the residence to a neighbor’s house and called 911. Lewis said responding officers found Caldwell lying on the bed face up with a gun in his right hand and a bullet wound to his temple.

Lewis said there was a lot of blood loss at the scene and that one bullet hit Scott in a major artery on her right arm. Scott was treated for her injuries at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Scott had surgery on her arm and had been unavailable for law enforcement to interview as of Monday morning, Lewis said. According to Lewis, Scott’s mother gave deputies a statement that her daughter told Caldwell she was going to leave and at that point Caldwell became violent.

The FCSO continues to investigate this case. SLED assisted the FCSO with the investigation with processing the crime scene and recovering evidence.
