A pedestrian was hit by a car on South Lafayette Square late Tuesday morning.

According to LaGrange police, Janet Gilbert, 56, had the right of way walking across South Lafayette when Barbara Hembree, 70, turned right onto South Lafayette from Main Street and struck Gilbert. Gilbert was transported to the West Georgia Medical Center.

Officer Chris Vines was on the scene and said he does not expect any life-threatening injuries.

“I think she just got banged up a little bit, luckily,” Vines said.

According to Vines, Hembree was at fault, though she thought she had the right of way but did not realize she has to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Gilbert is the owner of Serendipity and was visiting the new location on the square which opened today.
