WINNSBORO — Richard Winn Academy hosted the Christmas Classic Tournament this past weekend.
The Eagles boys team hosted Providence Athletic Club on Friday. The game looked promising for Richard Winn, as they got off to a solid start to lead 27-20 at half time.
However, the PAC Panthers sought a win, and got one. Providence advanced to the tournament championship with a close win of 51-46. Leading scorers for the Eagles were Joseph Goldin with eight, Jason Branham with seven, and Patrick Pope, Mitchell Gibbons, and Cameron Cooper all scored six.
It was a battle of the Eagles for the boys’ consolation game. Richard Winn hosted Newberry Academy, which had lost to Ben Lippen the day before. Newberry Academy had little trouble handling Richard Winn, holding RWA to just 14 points in the first half.
Newberry Academy defeated the Eagles 66-37. Pope led in scoring for Richard Winn with nine points. Mason Gibbons contributed six, and Cooper and Goldin both had five.
Newberry Academy had three players hit double digits in scoring. Jacob Epting, Justin Suber and Ryan Smith led the way for NA with 16, 15 and 14, respectively.
Jason Branham was named All Tournament for Richard Winn.
The Eagles head for more tournament play on Dec. 27 in the Newberry Holiday Shootout.
