WINNSBORO — The Fairfield Central Lady Griffins (4-0) basketball team remained undefeated Saturday night with a 62-37 win over Newberry (2-3), which suffered its third straight loss.
On defense, the Lady Griffs came away with 25 steals. Tiea’quanna Pearson and Raven Rivers were tied for a team-lead, six steals apiece. Pearson just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Besides an 18-point second quarter, Newberry never scored more than eight points in a quarter. At the half Fairfield led 35-26. However, during the second half, the Griffins locked Newberry down on defense and only allowed 11 second half points.
Spurred by a team-high 15 points, Tanise Davis was nominated as player of the game. She connected on five of her seven shots and four of her six free throws. Also scoring in double digits was Chyna Moore, Jada Martin and Rivers with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
On Friday (Dec. 13), Fairfield beat Great Falls (0-3) for the second time in six days by a score of 54-16. In the two games, the Lady Griffs have outscored Great Falls 115-28. Fairfield led 43-10 at the half.
Martin hit a new season best by notching a game-high 19 points. She made seven of her eight shots including making both of her three-point baskets. Pearson cracked double digits by chipping in 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards.
Next up, the Lady Griffs will host Lexington (1-3) tonight at Fairfield Central High School. Lexington is coming off a 38-27 loss at Columbia last week, and their only win came against Ridgeview by a score of 36-32.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
