RIDGEWAY — A Ridgeway man was arrested for driving under the influence following a collision early Sunday with a Fairfield County sheriff’s deputy.

At 2:24 a.m. Sunday, David Solomon Dawkins, 67, of 124 Long Drive in Ridgeway collided with the officer on S.C. 34 East. The accident was observed by another deputy on patrol in that area. According to the incident report, the driver of the vehicle claimed not to see the sheriff deputy’s car because he was looking at his cell phone.

Officers smelled alcohol on Dawkins and ordered him out of the vehicle. He was arrested by the S.C. Highway Patrol and taken into custody at the Fairfield County Detention Center.

According to the officer involved in the accident, Officer Temesius Tyrone Thomas, Dawkins’ car approached the back of his patrol car at a high rate of speed. Assuming the headlights to be those of the other officer, Thomas slowed for the vehicle to pass but instead was rear ended at the corner of S.C. 34 East and Coleman Highway.

Fairfield County EMS responded and transported the officer to Palmetto Richland for evaluation of a stiff back and right leg following the accident.
